SaskEnergy urges customers to keep natural gas equipment clear amid heavy snowfall

As significant snowfall is forecast across much of Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy is reminding customers to take precautions to ensure natural gas equipment continues operating safely during and after winter storms.

The Crown utility is asking residents and businesses to keep a clear path to and around natural gas meters to allow technicians easy access for routine servicing or in the event of an emergency.

Customers are advised not to push or pile snow around the meter, riser or exterior equipment vents. SaskEnergy also cautions against using snowblowers or plows near natural gas equipment, as accidental contact can cause damage.

Snow and ice buildup on meters can lead to service disruptions. SaskEnergy recommends removing snow and ice carefully by hand or with a soft-bristle broom. Customers should avoid kicking or striking the meter to break ice and should not use de-icing products or hot water, which can damage equipment.

Residents are also encouraged to watch for melting snow from rooftops or leaky eavestroughs, as runoff can refreeze and form ice on the meter.

In addition, exterior vents should be checked regularly to ensure they are free of snow, frost and ice blockages. Blocked vents can cause equipment malfunction and may create hazardous situations, including carbon monoxide buildup.

SaskEnergy says taking these simple precautions can help prevent service interruptions and ensure the safe operation of natural gas systems throughout the winter season.
