Submitted Westcliffe Composite School
Westcliffe Composite School held the official grand opening of its highly anticipated new playground addition on October 26, 2026. The School Community Council provided doughnuts and iced tea to the school and community members in attendance.
The playground addition has been in the works for two years, ever since the school received a generous $25,000 donation from Canadian Natural Resources Limited in 2024. SCC members Natalie Sullivan and Michelle McKillop donated their time and attended a Canadian Natural golf tournament in Lloydminster one cold, blustery day in order for us to obtain these funds.
The SCC voted to hold on to the donation for the playground addition until the provincial government’s election promise of matching grants for school playgrounds came to fruition. Westcliffe principal Erin Pincemin worked extensively on the matching grant proposal, and in the fall of 2025, the school was awarded the $25,000 grant.
With the initial donation from Canadian Natural and the provincial matching grant, a much nicer playground piece could be chosen. The playground addition is a ninja warrior-style layout called the Coast to Coast. It is visible from the highway running past Marengo, and it serves the school children during school hours as well as the whole community and surrounding communities during non-school hours.
The playground was installed over three days in late September. The full install was made possible by a monetary estate gift left by a Westcliffe Composite School alumnus, along with assistance and support from the facilities department at Sun West School Division.
The children of the school and the communities around Marengo are very excited about the new playground addition, which will be here for decades to come for all to enjoy.
Cut the ribbon, then climb on. Westcliffe Composite School officially opened its new Coast to Coast playground on October 26.
