Sun West launches recruitment campaign for school bus drivers

Sun West School Division has launched a concentrated recruitment campaign to attract more school bus drivers, a response to ongoing challenges filling driver positions across the division in recent years.

The campaign combines print and radio advertising with social media advertising and digital billboards to reach a wider audience.

"School bus drivers are among the most important members of our education team," said Michele Whitfield, chair of the Sun West School Division board of education. "They are trusted professionals who make it possible for hundreds of students to access their education safely every day. We want people to know that these positions are valued, respected and supported by Sun West."

Like many school divisions and transportation providers across Saskatchewan and Canada, Sun West has struggled to recruit drivers. Retirements, workforce shortages and increased competition for qualified drivers have all contributed to the shortage.

"We recognize that recruiting drivers requires us to reach people in new ways," Whitfield said. "That's why we're expanding beyond traditional advertising and investing in social media campaigns and billboards. We want to connect with anyone looking for meaningful part-time work that fits their lifestyle."

The campaign highlights benefits available to drivers, including dependable hours, training provided at no cost, reimbursement for required licensing and testing expenses, and access to health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance and pension benefits.

"Many people don't realize how rewarding this role can be," Whitfield said. "School bus drivers develop positive relationships with students and families while providing an essential service. They are respected members of their communities, and the impact they make is felt every school day."

Sun West supports candidates from application through training, testing and certification. Approved applicants are reimbursed for driver medical examinations, written testing, pre-trip testing, road testing and driver's abstracts.

New drivers also receive hands-on instruction, including vehicle inspections, driving practice and mentorship from experienced Sun West drivers before taking on routes independently.

The division hopes the campaign will encourage people who have not previously considered the job to take a closer look.

"We want people to know that no previous school bus driving experience is required," Whitfield said. "If someone has a strong commitment to safety and serving students, Sun West will help them every step of the way. We are looking for dependable individuals who want to make a real difference in the lives of children and families."
