Saskatchewan RCMP stop 5,271 vehicles during Canada Road Safety Week
REGINA – Saskatchewan RCMP and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan stopped 5,271 vehicles and took enforcement action against 2,013 drivers and passengers during Canada Road Safety Week.
Officers from RCMP detachments and CTSS units ran traffic patrols and check stops across the province between May 12 and 18, focusing on removing dangerous drivers from the roads and reminding motorists to drive safely.
As a result of the stops, officers:
charged 45 drivers with alcohol-impaired driving
charged 5 drivers with drug-impaired driving
suspended 58 licences for consuming alcohol before driving
suspended 39 licences for consuming drugs before driving
ticketed or warned 1,594 drivers for aggressive driving, including speeding, unsafe passing, stunting and following too closely
ticketed or warned 167 drivers for distracted driving
ticketed or warned 105 drivers or passengers for seatbelt violations
"Our police officers found safety concerns in about two out of every five vehicles they stopped," said Insp. Lee Knelsen, operations officer with Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services. "This is too high. That's why initiatives like Canada Road Safety Week are as important as ever. We will continue to remove dangerous drivers from Saskatchewan roads and to correct unsafe driving behaviours."
Knelsen also thanked the many drivers seen following the rules during the week.
Saskatchewan RCMP thanked their campaign partners, including CTSS police services, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers and Conservation Officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch.
