Katie (The Caver) is coming to Richmound!

The community of Richmound, Saskatchewan has been a hub of activity thanks to the seventeen dedicated members of the Richmound Lions Club. Their fundraising event is just around the corner … on the last Thursday of March. Gordon Ziegler was excited to share the details.

He described himself as the Lion’s “Lifetime Secretary” and promoter. “Our club has hosted an Annual Friendship Night for many years. For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed meeting and hearing people with interesting, unique personal stories to tell,” Gordon explained. And the Lion’s guest for their Friendship Night definitely fits that description.
Katie (The Caver) Graham is an accountant by day, but during her spare time she takes huge risks as she explores the deepest caves in Canada, crawling through mud, squeezing through tight spaces and pushing her diving skills to the limit. It’s not a hobby for the faint of heart.
Gordon and his wife regularly attend The Best of The Banff Film Festival when it comes to Medicine Hat. “Two years ago we marvelled at the story of a team of spelunkers (people who study caves as a hobby), including Katie as they explored Canada’s deepest cave, northwest of Fernie, BC,” Gordon said. “We marvelled at the perseverance and courage of some people in the face of great personal discomfort and danger.”
Katie accepted Gordon’s invitation to speak at the Richmound Lion’s Friends Night. He said the cave explorer will likely show footage of her adventure when she broke her foot while far far far below the surface, where you don’t call a rescue because nobody will respond.
It looks like attendees will be hearing some exciting stories while enjoying good food, door prizes and raffles. “There will also be auctions, including several live ones by a professional auctioneer friend of ours, Darren Lutz,” he added.
Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting multiple on-going projects: a memorial to a firefighter, a geodesic dome for the community, and a K-12 program for schools.
Katie will have lots of exciting stories to share about exploring the longest and deepest caves in Canada.
