Harvest Operations in 1947

Harvest looked much different in 1947, as this photograph from the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan illustrates.A Massey-Harris combine unloads grain into a grain truck, which then transfers it to a portable elevator hopper. From there, the grain is conveyed into a wooden granary for storage, a common practice on Prairie farms before on-farm bins became widespread. The photograph also captures the family nature of harvest, with a father and his two sons appearing to take part in the day's work. It is a reminder of an era when every member of the family played a role in bringing in the crop and farm work relied as much on teamwork as machinery.
