UNITY – Unity, Wilkie and Macklin RCMP responded to a range of calls from Oct. 20 to 26, including a fuel theft, a stolen vehicle and a collision with a moose.
In Unity, RCMP received complaints about a break and enter at a shop, an individual entering a car and a break and enter into a garage. Members found the person the complaints were about, and the complainants asked that no further action be taken. Police received a report of fuel stolen from a local gas station. That matter is still under investigation. Members issued a three-day roadside suspension during a traffic stop.
Officers did two well-being checks, one at the request of a concerned citizen and one at the request of a family member. Police received a complaint about a suspicious individual walking near a residence but could not find the person after patrolling. A disturbing the peace complaint ended with a verbal warning. Members also responded to a report of cows on Highway 14 and notified the owner. Police received a report of a vehicle hitting a moose. No one was injured, and the collision was reported for insurance purposes. There was also one false alarm.
In Wilkie, RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle found in the community. Another RCMP detachment had already charged the person involved in other incidents, and that person was remanded for court. Members are investigating a report of an individual damaging a vehicle. Police found the registered owner of a vehicle abandoned in a rural area, and the owner confirmed it was not stolen. After two reports of a suspicious individual walking down the street, members found the person, and no further police action was needed. Police also helped Emergency Medical Services with a patient and spoke to an individual about trespassing.
In Macklin, RCMP received a complaint of harassing communications and gave the person involved a verbal warning. A complaint of uttering threats did not proceed because there was not enough evidence. There was also one false alarm.
Anyone with information about crimes in the Unity, Wilkie or Macklin areas is asked to call the Unity RCMP at 306-228-6300, the Wilkie RCMP at 306-843-3480 or the Macklin RCMP at 306-753-2171. To stay anonymous, call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or *8477 on the SaskTel Mobility network, or send a tip online at saskcrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers does not use call display and does not trace or record calls. It pays up to $2,000 for information that leads to the arrest of anyone responsible for a serious crime.
Unity RCMP also remind residents that Saskatchewan’s Online Crime Reporting tool lets people report some crimes without calling a detachment, which takes work off frontline officers. The site is at ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/saskatchewan. It takes reports of fraud and scams under $5,000, such as CRA scams, compromised personal information and internet or phone fraud. It also takes reports of property damage under $5,000, such as vandalized Canada Post mailboxes, spray-painted fences and damage at oilfield sites. Lost or stolen property under $5,000 can be reported too, including catalytic converters, car batteries, mail, bikes and copper wire. Traffic complaints qualify when the direction of the vehicle, the licence plate or a full description is unknown. So do harassing phone calls, texts and social media messages, but threats of violence and sextortion are not covered. If an incident fits one of these categories but there is a witness or a suspect, report it to the local RCMP detachment.
