Assault charges laid in Unity and Wilkie

Two men face assault charges in RCMP reports from the Unity, Wilkie and Macklin detachments covering Sept. 15 to 28.

In Unity, a 38-year-old man from Unity was charged with assault causing bodily harm after police received a complaint of a dispute. Members are also investigating a complaint of criminal harassment. After a report of a suspicious person walking on the road, police executed an arrest warrant at the request of another RCMP detachment.

Police twice received reports of a person on the highway near Unity but could not locate the subject during patrols. Members handled three trespassing-related calls. One complaint was unfounded, and officers spoke with the people involved in the other two. Police conducted two well-being checks at the request of concerned citizens and responded to two Mental Health Act complaints. Members spoke with a person about a peace bond, and a report of a suspicious person walking down the street required no further police action. A public mischief complaint ended with a verbal warning.

Officers euthanized an injured deer on the highway. Police notified CN Rail of a malfunctioning railway crossing near Unity and alerted SaskTel after seeing a vehicle damage an overhead fibre optic line. A complaint of counterfeit money deposited at a local bank and a report of a nonsensical letter were both closed for insufficient evidence. Unity members also handled three traffic complaints, one false alarm and one false 911 call.

In Wilkie, a 59-year-old man from Wilkie was charged with assault with a weapon after police received an assault complaint. A 43-year-old woman from Wilkie was charged with failing to comply with a probation order and failing to comply with a release order condition at the request of probation services.

Two other assault complaints were closed for insufficient evidence. A forcible confinement complaint did not proceed after the victim declined. Of two uttering threats complaints, one was unfounded and the complainant declined to proceed in the other. Three complaints that a person was not complying with a court order were all unfounded.

Investigations continue into a report of a person in possession of stolen property, a report of a person in possession of drugs, a stolen bicycle and a stolen truck.

Members kept the peace twice, once while a person retrieved belongings from a residence and once while the bylaw officer served a summons at a residence at the Town of Wilkie's request. Officers also mediated a public dispute and spoke with the people involved in a breach of the peace report. Police spoke with the subject in three reports of a suspicious person near a residence. A trespassing subject could not be located during patrols, and an unwanted person at a business was gone when officers arrived. The complainant declined to proceed.

A report of animal neglect was referred to Animal Protection Services, and a complaint of a dog biting a person was referred to the bylaw officer. Police returned a loose dog to its owner and safely disposed of a knife found near a school playground. Other Wilkie calls included serving a document for a business, locating a lost cell phone and assisting emergency medical services with a patient. There were also six traffic complaints, two false alarms, one false 911 call and one noise complaint.

In Macklin, police are investigating a complaint of assault and a complaint of theft. A fraud complaint was closed for insufficient evidence, and a complaint of a person possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose was unfounded. A report of two suspicious people near a business required no further police action. A vehicle collision with a deer was reported for insurance purposes. Macklin members also handled three traffic complaints and one false alarm.

Anyone with information about crimes in the Unity, Wilkie or Macklin areas is asked to call the Unity RCMP at 306-228-6300, the Wilkie RCMP at 306-843-3480 or the Macklin RCMP at 306-753-2171. To stay anonymous, call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or *8477 on the SaskTel Mobility network, or submit a tip online at saskcrimestoppers.com. Crime Stoppers does not use call display and does not trace or record calls. It pays up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible for a serious crime.

Unity RCMP remind residents that Saskatchewan's Online Crime Reporting tool lets people report certain crimes without calling a detachment, which shifts some workload away from front-line officers. Eligible reports include frauds and scams under $5,000, such as CRA scams and compromised identity information. Vandalism under $5,000 also qualifies, including damage to mailboxes, fences and oilfield sites. So does lost or stolen property under $5,000, such as catalytic converters, car batteries, mail, bikes and copper wire. Traffic complaints qualify when the vehicle's direction, licence plate or full description is unknown. Harassing phone calls, texts and social media messages can also be reported online, but not threats of violence or sextortion. Reports can be made at ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/saskatchewan. If there is a witness or a suspect, report directly to the local detachment.
