A Saskatchewan graduation memory, 1967

By Joan Janzen

This graduation memory is from 1967. My oldest sister, Blanche, was graduating from St. Angela's Academy in Prelate, while I was just beginning my school years in Liebenthal.

Blanche and her little sister Joan pose for a graduation photo in 1967 in front of the family's new pickup. Matching hot pink dresses, prairie wind and plenty of Final Net made for a memorable Saskatchewan graduation day.

Although you can't tell in this black-and-white photo, our dresses were made from the same hot pink silk and lace fabric. You can tell by the flying bouquet and my less-than-happy expression as I battled the wind that it was a typical Saskatchewan day. Nevertheless, my sister's hair remained perfectly in place thanks to a generous application of Final Net hairspray.

And, of course, back in those days, no graduation photo was complete without the family's newest vehicle proudly serving as the backdrop.
