The Pod Report: Oct 22, Podcast for every subject

By Dana Block

"If you care about a subject, there's a podcast for it." — Michelle Dean

Looking for a new podcast to add to your listening library? These five shows are new and noteworthy and could be the next "Serial," the next "SmartLess," or simply your personal favorite:

True Crime: "The Woman in the Woods" -- Veteran "48 Hours" host Erin Moriarty leads this true-crime mystery about Mindi Kassotis, who began sending her friends alarming messages about being threatened -- possibly due to her attorney husband's classified work with the military. With two deaths in a short period of time and a dismembered body found in the woods, everything isn't what it seems. When confronted, the accused relays a doozy of a story involving a "man in the shadows," but is it believable enough to clear his name? (48HoursPodcasts.com)

History: "What the Fact with Connor Tomlinson and Carter Roy" -- Connor Tomlinson ("Love on the Spectrum") and Carter Roy ("Found Footage 3D") headline this new podcast where they share some unbelievable true facts about events in history, pop culture, myths, monsters -- you name it! Recent episodes include revelations about three classic motion pictures that almost didn't see the light of day, followed by another discussion about the "three worst years in human history." (No, it doesn't include 2026.) (Acast.com)

Society and Culture: "Deep Secrets" -- When comedian Hunter Hill takes an interest into his family's past, he learns of a long-buried secret that connects his grandfather to one of the most-covert CIA operations in history -- one that the Smithsonian Magazine refers to as "a real-life 'Ocean's Eleven.'" He enlists the help of his sister Kaylan, historian Dawn Brodey, and the listeners of this podcast to help him piece together each layer of the mystery involving a Russian submarine and more -- much more. Documentary: "No One Is Coming" -- "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth" is the premise of this podcast, which has the benefit of hindsight when it comes to the unexpected. Without laying blame, we can learn from others' mistakes when disaster strikes, whether it's inflicted by Mother Nature or an unscrupulous scammer. In a recent episode, host Lance Still explores the "terrifying physics of tsunamis and the hidden history buried right beneath our feet." In an episode titled "The Urgency Trap," listeners can learn how to outsmart a crook and protect themselves when a call or text "demands immediate action." (NoOneIsComingPodcast.com)

Sports News: "House of Troy" -- The prestigious University of Southern California has been in the news over the past couple of decades for various scandals. In this new podcast from LA Times Studios, listeners revisit the rise and fall of a college football dynasty, which preceded and pales in comparison to many that have followed. Hear from the coaches, players and USC officials who were there during the glory years (back-to-back national titles), as well as during the fallout from the Reggie Bush scandal. (LATimes.com)
