Receiving too little moisture during long periods in fall and winter can result in injury or death of any plants that have shallow root systems. Those affected may appear normal, and may even resume growth in the spring, but can still fail when temperatures rise. To combat this, water only when temps are above 40°F. Apply water during the midday hours, so that it will have time to soak in before any possible freezing occurs at night.
