The Garden Bug: Red Hot Poker

By Brenda Weaver

Known as "Red Hot Poker" or "The Torch Lily", this perennial is native to Africa. It thrives in well-draining soil, needs little care and resists pests. Each flower spike can grow 3 - 4 feet tall and displays brilliant yellow to orange to red petals.

They are attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Fortunately, deer don't like them!

Grow your red hot poker plants in full sun for the best blooms. They will tolerate some shade, and can benefit from it where summers are most brutal.
