The Garden Bug: First Day of Spring

By Brenda Weaver

This year, the vernal (or spring) equinox happens on March 20 at 10:46 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time. It is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and of the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the "celestial equator" going south to north.
