Fun Fact: Roman Festival of Lupercalia

The ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia was conducted every year on February 15 by priests called Luperci. As a rite of fertility, the festival was associated with the god Faunus. Each ceremony included animal sacrifices, blood rites, and feasting.

The priests would then run about the streets, slapping women with the skins of the sacrificed animals, which was said to increase their fertility.
