Diamonds form about 100 miles under the earth. They are carried to the surface by volcanic activity.

Diamonds are the only gems made of one element: pure carbon. The word diamond comes from the Greek "adamas" which means "invincible" or "indestructible." Some believed diamonds gave their wearers special powers of invincibility in battle.
