The origins of the Ugly Christmas Sweater
During the holiday season, many people dig out their so-called ugly Christmas sweaters. Workplaces often designate days for employees to wear them, and they are a staple at Christmas parties and other festive events.
However, there was a time when these sweaters were considered fashionable. A December 1990 advertisement promotes them as ideal stocking stuffers, without any mention of the word “ugly.”
It remains unclear exactly when the shift occurred from trendy holiday wear to what is now known as the ugly Christmas sweater.
