Swift Current’s Val Choo-Foo earns national recreation award

SWIFT CURRENT — A Swift Current resident is being celebrated on the national stage.

Val Choo-Foo has been named the 2025 recipient of the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) Award of Merit — the first Saskatchewan winner since 2019.

The award was presented at the Innovation Plex, with family, local officials, and provincial dignitaries on hand to celebrate Choo-Foo’s achievements.

Choo-Foo spent more than 13 years with the City of Swift Current’s Community Services Team and has volunteered as a fitness instructor for older adults. From Active Play to Walking for Wellness and Forever…in Motion, she has led programs that keep people of all ages active, connected and healthy.

“Val is an outstanding ambassador for recreation in Swift Current and across the province,” said Darcy McLeod, president of the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.

In 2024, she received the provincial Leadership Excellence Award — a stepping stone to her national recognition.

“Her leadership shows how recreation strengthens our communities,” said CPRA CEO Martin Sampson. “Val’s vision, inclusivity and service set an example for the sector nationwide.”

The CPRA Awards honour Canadians who demonstrate passion, commitment and leadership in parks and recreation.
