Saskatchewan Safety Council seeks rural hosts for free mature driver course

The Saskatchewan Safety Council (SSC) is looking for rural communities to host its free Mature Driver Refresher Course.

The SSC delivers the course across the province each year. It runs sessions at its Regina location from September to June and also brings the course to rural communities.

Organizations or communities with a location in mind and a dozen or more interested attendees can apply to host by completing the form at sasksafety.org. The SSC supplies hosts with an instructor and promotional tools, including posters.

The course takes place in an informal group setting and is strictly informational. There is no exam, and participants' driver's licences are not affected. It runs about six hours, plus a lunch break.

The training reviews changes to provincial driving laws and best practices. The aim is to build confidence on Saskatchewan's changing city streets and highways and help drivers keep their independence.

Topics include everyday situations such as intersections and following distance, hazardous conditions such as hydroplaning, and how drivers can protect themselves on the road. The course also covers medication awareness and safety devices such as air bags. Discussions look at how drivers can adapt to the physical changes that come with age.
