RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina gets $7.7 million for renovation

REGINA – The RCMP museum in Regina is getting a makeover.

The federal government is providing $7.7 million from its Build Communities Strong Fund to renovate and modernize the RCMP Heritage Centre, a statement said.

Crews "will upgrade critical building systems, modernize exhibits and improve accessibility," the statement said. Officials expect better safety, functionality and sustainability, it said. The centre "is a place of discovery, exploration, reflection and reconciliation," it added.

"The RCMP is one of Canada's most recognizable institutions, with deep roots right here in Saskatchewan, and its long and complex history is an important part of our national story," said Buckley Belanger, the rural development secretary of state, speaking for Gregor Robertson, whose cabinet responsibilities include the Economic Development Department.

The grant "will help ensure the RCMP Heritage Centre can preserve that history and remain a place for Canadians visiting Regina to learn and reflect for generations to come," Belanger said.

It "will spur economic growth in the region, sustain skilled trade jobs, enhance tourism to the Prairies and improve and enhance vital community infrastructure," said Sam Karikas, who runs the centre.

The fund has $51 billion to divide among infrastructure projects "that support economic prosperity, housing, sport, culture, education, health, transit and climate adaptation," the statement explained.
