Prep homes now to manage winter heating costs

As temperatures begin to cool, SaskEnergy is encouraging customers to take a few simple steps now to help manage home heating costs this fall and winter.

Small changes can make a difference in home energy use and help heating systems run more efficiently, the Crown corporation says.

SaskEnergy recommends customers clean or replace their furnace filter every one to two months and keep heating vents clear of furniture, rugs and drapes.

Installing a smart or programmable thermostat can also help. Customers can lower the thermostat by a couple of degrees while they sleep or when they are away from home.

Sealing drafts around windows and doors with weatherstripping is another low-cost way to keep heat in.

SaskEnergy also suggests customers have their furnace inspected and maintained by a qualified heating professional before colder weather arrives. Regular maintenance helps make sure heating equipment runs safely and efficiently through the heating season, and it may catch potential problems before they turn into costly repairs.

Customers looking for a qualified contractor can find a list of heating professionals in the SaskEnergy Network Members directory on the SaskEnergy website.

The utility offers a range of tools, resources and programs to help customers manage energy use and plan for seasonal changes in energy costs. More information is available at saskenergy.com/waystosave.
