Plenty and Biggar students practise budgeting skills

Grade 12 students from North West Central School in Plenty and Biggar Central School 2000 met at NWCS on Nov. 25 for “Game of Life: Reality Check,” a hands-on financial simulation aimed at preparing them for life after graduation.

Students were assigned careers based on their interests and post-secondary plans, with salaries drawn from Saskatchewan averages and current job postings. They then moved through a series of booths representing real-world expenses — housing, transportation, insurance, groceries and utilities among them. Costs reflected current market rates, and deductions were calculated using Canada Revenue Agency tools.

The event was supported by volunteers and local organizations, including Atlas York Insurance, Dodsland Credit Union, the Village of Plenty, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and several community members.

The activity challenged students to use problem-solving, communication and budgeting skills while making decisions about everyday expenses. It also offered a practical look at financial responsibilities and the difference between needs and wants. The afternoon included additional sessions on nutrition, finances and wellness, giving students more tools for life beyond school.
