SWIFT CURRENT - The Swift Current Agricultural and Exhibition Association has named John Watson as the 2026 Frontier Days parade marshal, recognizing decades of service, volunteerism and ties to western heritage.
The parade marshal role is a longstanding Frontier Days tradition that honours individuals who reflect the spirit and values of southwest Saskatchewan. The marshal leads one of the region's most anticipated annual events and stands as a symbol of community pride, volunteerism and western culture.
Born in Moose Jaw in 1925, Watson served with the Royal Regina Rifles during the Second World War, earning numerous distinctions before his honourable discharge in 1946. His commitment to service continued through his professional career and volunteer work. At nearly 100 years old, he remains active with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign.
Watson's connection to Frontier Days spans generations. He has supported the event through past fundraising efforts and rode in the parade with the Moose Jaw Shrine Equestrian Club. His lifelong passion for horses and western culture has kept Frontier Days a meaningful part of his family traditions.
"Selecting a parade marshal is one of the most meaningful honours for Frontier Days," said Rebecca Anderson, general manager of the Swift Current Ag and Ex. "John Watson represents resilience, service and community spirit. His connection to Frontier Days, dedication to volunteering and love of western heritage make him an exceptional choice to lead the 2026 parade."
The Swift Current Ag and Ex is also reminding businesses, organizations, clubs and community groups that float applications for the Frontier Days parade remain open. The final deadline is June 12, 2026.
