Five suspected overdoses in seven hours prompt RCMP warning in Lloydminster
LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. - Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Lloydminster are warning the public after responding to five suspected overdoses within a seven-hour period on April 13.
Police say at least four doses of naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, were administered to assist individuals. In one case, officers transported a person to hospital due to delays in ground ambulance services.
All five incidents were separate, and none resulted in fatalities.
Investigators have not yet determined where the drugs involved were obtained. While laboratory analysis is still pending, police believe the substances may have been laced or contained higher levels of opioids than expected.
RCMP issued the advisory to highlight the risks associated with consuming illicit drugs.
Police note that signs of a fentanyl overdose can include slow or irregular breathing, pinpoint pupils, muscle stiffness, seizures and unconsciousness.
They are urging people to avoid using drugs alone, to have someone check in or stay on the phone during use, and to call 911 immediately if an overdose is suspected. Carrying a naloxone kit and knowing how to use it can help save lives, police said.
RCMP also suggest considering tools such as the Digital Overdose Response System, which can alert others in the event of an emergency.
Anyone seeking help for substance use can contact the Virtual Opioid Dependency Program or call the addiction helpline at 1-866-332-2322 for information, treatment options and support services.
