Fiske community to host fundraiser for single mom's home repairs

By Joan Janzen

Rural Saskatchewan is well known for lending a hand to help neighbours and friends, and an opportunity to do just that is coming up at the community of Fiske. On Saturday, May 16, a fundraiser will be held at the Fiske Hall to raise funds for a new roof for the home of Rebecca Siemens and her seven-year-old daughter Hannauh. Your support is compassion in action.

The fun begins at 7 p.m. with live music, door prizes, food, and a silent auction, with every bid helping to provide much-needed repairs to the roof of their home. It will be a night of fun and visiting while supporting a local family.

Rebecca is a school bus driver in Kindersley, a mother to her energetic and animal-loving daughter Hannauh, and also works weekends catering, cleans homes and helps run her farm located just outside of Fiske.

"Last November my husband of ten years chose to leave our family. He left me with full responsibility for our daughter and the farm," she explained.

Throughout the past years, a persistent but minor leak above an upstairs window was never properly addressed and has grown. Currently multiple windows leak and parts of the house's structure have deteriorated.

"A severe hailstorm last fall further damaged the shingles, but due to the age of the roof, insurance is unable to assist," she explained.

At present, sections of the roof are covered with plastic sheeting, and several windows can no longer be opened or closed due to deterioration.

The event will raise funds for the projected costs of shingling the quonset-style roof, replacing windows and repairing broken and missing sections of stucco.

"My hope is to keep as much of the work and support as local as possible," she said. "Every contribution, large or small, makes a meaningful difference as I work to keep my daughter in the only home she has ever known and preserve the one asset remaining from the past eleven years."
