WAINWRIGHT – Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed and dozens more seriously injured in a fire that started in the training area at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Oct. 17.
Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the four deaths on Sunday, Oct. 18, at press time. He said next of kin had been notified. Carney called the fire one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime and ordered flags on all federal buildings lowered to half-mast.
The fire ignited at about 4 p.m. local time and spread rapidly beyond the boundaries of the training area. Military and civilian emergency services responded to bring it under control and to support those affected. By late Saturday night, the Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire was being held.
In a news release issued from Ottawa on Oct. 18, the Department of National Defence said the full extent of the impact is still being assessed.
“The Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, partners across the federal government, including Public Safety, are working with the Government of Alberta and municipal governments to mobilize all necessary support,” said Defence Minister David McGuinty. “My thoughts are with the families and with everyone impacted by this tragic event.”
Gen. Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, called it a profoundly difficult moment for the entire military.
“Our immediate focus remains on supporting those affected, assisting emergency response efforts, and ensuring the well-being of our members, their families, and the surrounding community,” Carignan said.
Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright, commander of the Canadian Army, said soldiers, civilian personnel and emergency responders are working closely with local authorities.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries resulting from this incident,” Wright said. “The Canadian Army remains committed to supporting those affected and will continue to provide assistance wherever it is needed.”
The cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed. The CAF said it will provide more information as it becomes available.
