Assault, fires, and theft: RCMP busy in local communities

By Kate Winquist

Local RCMP detachments responded to a variety of incidents over the past week, ranging from vehicle fires to investigations of threats and thefts.

In Unity, officers dealt with several notable incidents. A 47-year-old local man faces multiple charges, including assault, uttering threats, and failing to comply with undertaking conditions following complaints of assault and threats. Police also investigated a report of counterfeit currency at a business, though there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Officers assisted Livestock Services of Saskatchewan with a livestock dispute and responded to reports of vehicle and combine fires in rural areas near Unity and Luseland. Fire departments extinguished all fires, none of which were considered suspicious.

Other Unity-area investigations included complaints of trespassing, forgery, and vehicle collisions, including one involving a deer and another with a gate. Police also conducted a wellbeing check at the request of an employer and responded to reports of gunshots, which were determined to be lawful hunting activity. Members located a missing person with the assistance of family. The detachment also handled three false 911 calls and a traffic complaint.

In Wilkie, RCMP responded to theft, trespassing, and disturbing-the-peace complaints. Officers referred two dogs running loose to the town’s bylaw officer and investigated a report of graffiti at Wilkie Memorial Park. There were also complaints involving an individual taking a motor vehicle without consent and a Mental Health Act complaint.

Macklin officers handled a mix of traffic, theft, trespassing, and fraud complaints, as well as a Mental Health Act matter. A 49-year-old Macklin man was charged with uttering threats following a reported incident. Members also assisted a resident seeking a tow company and investigated a vehicle collision with a streetlight. Several complaints of disturbing the peace and trespassing could not be substantiated due to insufficient evidence or the subjects being gone on arrival.
